Early Sunday morning in Bogotá, the USA’s “Yankee Babes” delivered a dominant 7-0 victory over Paraguay in Group C of the Colombia 2024 U20 Women’s World Championship.
Princeton Tigers’ forward Pietra Adao Tordin shone brightly, netting a hat trick with goals in the 10th, 12th, and 67th minutes, becoming the first USA player to achieve this feat since Savannah DeMelo’s in the 2018 World Cup. Coincidentally, that match was the only prior meeting between the USA and Paraguay at the U20 level.
The USA’s scoring spree didn’t stop there—Gisele Thompson added a goal in the 29th minute, followed by Yuna McCormack in the 44th minute (she also scored against Morocco), Ally Sentnor in the 52nd, and Maddie Dahlien in the 83rd minute (who also found the net earlier in the tournament against Morocco).
Referee Ivana Projkovska from North Macedonia officiated the match with precision, ensuring VAR wasn’t needed to intervene during the USA-Paraguay showdown.
Spain Secures a 2-0 Victory Over Morocco in Group C
In the other Group C match, Spain overcame Morocco with a 2-0 win. Nahia Jaular opened the scoring in the 5th minute, assisted by Corrales, while midfielder Moral Ruiz sealed the victory in the 89th minute after a VAR review approved her goal at 90+1. VAR had a busy night, disallowing a Spain goal at 45+4, denying a Morocco penalty at the 51st minute, and turning down two penalty appeals for Spain in the 80th and 90+12 minutes.
Despite VAR’s rulings, Spain topped Group C with 9 points and a +5 goal difference, followed by the USA with 6 points and a +8 goal difference. Paraguay finished third with 3 points and a -7 goal difference, while Morocco exited the tournament at the bottom with no points and a -6 goal difference.
