Chipolopolo remain in the hunt to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and ahead of their showdown with Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday, Goal profiles five players who could cause the Super Eagles problems on Saturday.
Patson Daka: He got the only goal of the game when Chipolopolo won away in Algeria in their last qualifier, and troubled the Desert Warriors throughout the 90 minutes. Despite being just 18, the FC Liefering forward has already demonstrated that he can trouble some of the continent’s best defences, and mustn’t be underestimated.
Brian Mwila: The Platinum Stars striker bagged a fantastic brace in the 3-1 win over Algeria in Lusaka. He made his debut for Zambia last June and has now scored seven goals in just eight apperances. The Nigerian rearguard will need to be alert to stop his threat as he is deadly in the six-yard box.
Kondwani Mtonga: The veteran defensive midfielder has been an ever-present during the qualifiers, and has done a fine job in protecting the back four. The Nigerian attack will need to be mindful as he looks to put in another solid display; can they find a way past the experienced midfielder?
Stoppila Sunzu: Sunzu is another player that has featured in every single game of the qualifiers. His presence at the back brings stability, and with a height of 189cm, he will be ready to stop any of Nigeria’s aerial threats. The defender is a veteran of the Chipolopolo’s victorious 2012 Nations Cup-winning campaign, and has played in Europe with LOSC Lille and Sochaux.
Kennedy Mweene: At 32, Mweene boasts vast experience and continues to be an evergreen performer. He was also a part of the Afcon 2012-winning team, and memorably netted a penalty against Nigeria during the 2013 edition as Chipolopolo failed to defend their title. The Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper has only conceded four goals, the second lowest in Group B after the Super Eagles, during the ongoing campaign. Having succeeded in keeping the Algerians quiet in Constantine last time out, the 116-cap Zambian will be full of confidence in Uyo on Saturday, and he’s proved in the past that he’s a player who relishes the big occasion.
