Nigeria suffered their first-ever defeat to Benin Republic and previously settled for a draw against South Africa in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers for Africa, casting doubt on their chances of qualifying for the competition.
Nigeria’s fortunes in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers for Africa took a downturn as they suffered their first-ever defeat to Benin Republic and previously managed a draw against South Africa. These results have left their aspirations of qualifying for the competition in a precarious position.
In the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, the Super Eagles now find themselves ranked 5th in Africa, slipping two places on the continental ladder. Morocco has ascended one spot to become the highest-ranked team in Africa, positioned 12th globally. Following Morocco are Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th) in second, third, and fourth places respectively on the continent.
Globally, the top five positions are held by Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England in that order.
The Super Eagles’ disappointing World Cup qualification campaign has resulted in them securing just three points from four games, leaving them four points adrift of Group C leaders Rwanda.
In response to these underwhelming performances, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to appoint a technical adviser for the team in the upcoming weeks.
Shortly after this decision, Finidi George stepped down as the head coach of the team, less than two months after assuming leadership of the Super Eagles.
Finidi’s resignation coincided with a public dispute involving star Striker Victor Osimhen, who responded to remarks reportedly attributed to Finidi accusing him of lacking commitment to the national team.
As of now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not issued an official statement regarding Finidi’s resignation or Osimhen’s reaction. The Super Eagles’ next competitive fixture is scheduled for later this year, marking the beginning of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
