“EMPOWERING TEACHERS, TRAINERS AND YOUTH FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: BUILDING SKILLS FOR TOMORROW”,
This was the theme for the world youth skills day. Answering questions on the importance of skills, Mr. Femi Davies Ojeyemi stressed the need for amenities to be provided so youths will have an enabling environment to learn.
He said the theme emphasizes on the need for youths to have skills in order to have a more purposeful life and it recognizes the use of skills development towards the growth of the world. He said one has to adapt to the way the world is growing, which is a key skill, having foresight of the future. This includes having entrepreneurial skills and relational skills as a teacher or a trainer. He also said as a trainer, one has to always be involved.
The need for critical thinking in terms of learning was emphasized during the conversation on the morning show. Talking about innovative teaching methodology he advised that collaborative learning should be incorporated, where teamwork is not overlooked and technology is effectively used to facilitate that such as Virtual technology and augmented reality. He also mentioned the use of the flip classroom, which he explained that it entails literally going out of the conventional classroom setting and practices, he also added the adoption of practical learning or experiential learning where mentorship will play a key role.
He mentioned that against the notion that Artificial Intelligence makes young people lazy, the guest highlighted the fact that AI actually, encourages the youth to think for themselves as it only breaks down information into the simplest form and allows the person to develop the idea from there, this gives the user the opportunity to own their work.
He encouraged the teachers to adapt to the new trends and find a way to make it meet the needs around them and also to collaborate with experts in the fields; he also advised those who may be disadvantaged due to location and the lack of basic facilities to be reached and encouraged providing palliatives such as reduced cost of data to enable them access training online and create programs where they’re educated. In essence, seek new knowledge.
