Amid ongoing controversy, 88 members of the House of Representatives have urged the Federal Government to suspend the Samoa Agreement’s implementation until all clauses are clarified and addressed.
Newspot reports that the Samoa Agreement, signed between the Federal Government and the European Union, has faced significant backlash, with many criticizing it for allegedly recognizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights.
On Tuesday, House member Aliyu Madaki moved the motion, highlighting a clause on “gender equality” which he described as a Trojan horse potentially violating the country’s moral values. The House has tasked its relevant committees to investigate the agreement’s controversial provisions.
However, during a press conference on Saturday, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, alongside Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, assured that Nigeria would not enter into any agreement contradicting the Constitution or the religious and cultural sensibilities of its diverse population. Bagudu stated that the agreement aims to enhance food security and promote inclusive economic development.
