Philanthropy, for Mr. Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, is deeply rooted in his commitment to humanity.
During a visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, on Thursday, Obi shed light on his decision to allocate over N1.5 billion to humanitarian causes in 2024. He clarified that his efforts are not about self-promotion but stem from a genuine desire to make a difference. He highlighted his donations of N10 million to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor for the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi, and another N10 million to Bishop Ndubisi Obi for projects at ADON College of Health Technology, Nnewi, as examples of his passion for impactful contributions.
Obi shared that his philanthropy is inspired by the visible impact of such efforts and the opportunity to improve lives. “Long before my public life, I found joy in supporting causes that uplift humanity. For example, I contributed to rebuilding efforts in Haiti after the earthquake and provided assistance wherever I could, even before becoming Governor,” Obi recalled.
He also described his visits with Bishop Ndubisi to facilities such as the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre for victims of drug abuse and a school for children with special needs. These experiences, he noted, deepened his resolve to support humanity. “When you witness such dedication, it’s impossible not to contribute—not for recognition, but for the sake of humanity,” he said.
Responding to whether his philanthropy was a strategy to enhance his public image, Obi refuted the claim, emphasizing that giving back is a moral, spiritual, and societal duty. He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing these efforts as long as he has the means.
“It’s never about me,” Obi concluded, “but about the collective impact we can achieve in creating a better society.”
