To enhance safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in the Ministry’s conference room, Oyetola underscored the urgent need to curb recurring boat accidents that have led to significant loss of lives and property. He emphasized that Nigeria’s waterways play a crucial role in commerce, transportation, and livelihoods, making their safety and efficiency essential for the growth of the blue economy.

The minister noted that the committee’s establishment aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.”

“The task ahead is challenging, but with unwavering dedication, we can eliminate boat mishaps and ensure our waterways remain safe, navigable, and prosperous for future generations,” Oyetola stated.

The committee comprises key stakeholders, including representatives from state governments, the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics. It will be chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, with Mr. Adams Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways at the Ministry, serving as Secretary.

The primary mandate of the committee is to conduct a comprehensive review of commercial boat operations in Nigeria, identify the root causes of frequent mishaps, and recommend sustainable safety measures.

Also speaking at the event, NIWA MD, Oyebamiji, assured the minister of the committee’s commitment to its assignment.

“Safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways is non-negotiable,” he stated, adding that under the minister’s leadership, NIWA has been repositioned to uphold its mandate with renewed focus.

He further emphasized that the committee’s establishment represents a decisive step in tackling safety challenges in inland water transport.

“This initiative is a solution-driven approach to eliminating boat mishaps. The confidence placed in this committee will not be misplaced. At NIWA, we see this as an opportunity to intensify efforts in minimizing marine accidents. On behalf of my fellow committee members, we pledge to work with diligence and focus on delivering sustainable solutions,” Oyebamiji concluded.
