The Federal Government is poised to begin implementing the National Values Charter, according to an announcement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
Addressing attendees in Abuja on Wednesday at the expanded retreat of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Idris emphasized that the Charter is a key initiative of his ministry aimed at ensuring Nigerians are fully aware of their constitutional rights and the obligations of their government. He noted, “The first objective is to make Nigerians aware of their constitutional rights and the responsibilities of the government, as outlined in the seven ‘Core Promises’ of the Charter.”
Idris also highlighted the Charter’s second goal, which is to educate Nigerians about their civic responsibilities, both to each other and to the nation. This aspect is detailed in the seven ‘Commitments’ of the Charter.
The Minister expressed his commitment to fostering a nation characterized by mutual respect and affection between citizens and their government. He praised the NOA for its role in shaping national narratives, promoting unity, and fostering inclusiveness across the country.
Idris commended the NOA’s Director General, Mr. Lanre Issa-Onilu, for his effective use of technology to enhance public engagement and feedback. He lauded the NOA for its advancements in digital communication, including the development of The Mobiliser App and an AI platform for civic engagement.
Describing the expanded retreat as a significant milestone, Idris noted that it offers an opportunity to refine the NOA’s vision and strengthen its efforts to positively impact Nigeria’s future.
