JAMB to Candidates: Write UTME Only in State Where You Registered

Candidates sitting for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will write the exam strictly within their state of registration, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has confirmed.

This reassurance was given by JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, during a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Benjamin explained that recent confusion stemmed from the mock UTME, where a few candidates were posted to centres outside their states due to limited availability of approved mock centres. He noted that such occurrences will not apply during the main UTME, as all accredited centres will be operational.

“If mock centres in Abuja are filled, candidates may be redirected to nearby locations like Nasarawa. But this isn’t expected during the main UTME since more centres will be available,” he said.

He further stated that early registration increases the likelihood of being assigned to a centre close to home. Late registrants might be posted to more distant centres within their state if nearby locations are already filled.

In a statement earlier released on Sunday, JAMB acknowledged delays and challenges faced by some candidates during the mock exam. These issues, Benjamin said, were anticipated as part of efforts to test new features and improve the overall UTME experience.

“The mock exam is designed to simulate the UTME environment while allowing JAMB to identify and fix any potential lapses,” he said. “It also helps candidates become more comfortable with the CBT format.”

JAMB encouraged candidates to stay committed and patient, emphasizing that ongoing improvements are aimed at delivering a better and more efficient exam process.

The 2025 UTME is scheduled to begin on April 25.
