In a heartfelt move to mark World Sickle Cell Day, Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has introduced a free health insurance scheme dubbed ‘5 Star Care’, aimed at supporting individuals living with sickle cell.
The award-winning singer made the announcement on Thursday via his Instagram page, describing the initiative as deeply personal and rooted in his own journey with the condition.
He revealed that the scheme will begin by offering free health insurance to 1,000 sickle cell warriors in Lagos State, with a broader vision to ease the financial burden of managing the disease.
“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise—to ensure that sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for,” he wrote. “We’re starting small, but this is only the beginning.”
The project is being spearheaded through the Adekunle Gold Foundation in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Health Management Agency, and the Sickle Cell Management Initiatives.
In a video message accompanying the announcement, Adekunle Gold emphasized the importance of access to quality healthcare, regardless of one’s background or income. “Our goal is simple: to ease the financial burden of managing sickle cell and help more people get the care they deserve without stress,” he said. “As someone who’s walked this path, I know how powerful it is to have the right support.”
He encouraged those eligible to register through the foundation’s official website, noting that this was just the beginning of a long-term commitment.
