A South African court has sentenced opposition leader Julius Malema to five years in prison for firing a rifle during a public rally.
Malema, who leads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was convicted over an incident that occurred eight years ago.
The court ruled that he violated firearm laws after discharging an assault rifle into the air during an EFF celebration in 2018.
Delivering the judgment, Magistrate Twanet Olivier said the act was deliberate and unlawful.
The sentencing drew a large crowd of Malema’s supporters, many dressed in the EFF’s signature red attire, who gathered outside the court in a show of solidarity.
The case has attracted significant political attention in South Africa, given Malema’s prominence as a vocal opposition figure.
