The Nigerian Army has firmly dismissed rumors about the death of Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja.
These rumors began when a Nigerian journalist posted on social media, claiming that Lagbaja had died from cancer 48 hours earlier. The post alleged that the announcement was being concealed due to pressure from other Generals seeking his position.
Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Lagbaja was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.
In response to the claims, the Nigerian Army labeled them as false. However, some sources within the Army Headquarters confirmed that while the Army chief is critically ill, he is not dead. One source urged, “We should be praying for him instead of spreading rumors.” Another confirmed he is receiving treatment abroad.
Attempts to contact the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, were unsuccessful, as his phone was off.
This situation comes as 15 Generals from the Nigerian Army, primarily from the Artillery Corps, are retiring. The Army announced this retirement, which includes 11 Major Generals and four Brigadier Generals, during a ceremony at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery in Kachia, Kaduna State.
Maj Gen James Myam (retd), speaking for the retired officers, reflected on their careers with gratitude and acknowledged the support they received. He also encouraged active officers to remain loyal to the constitution and prioritize security.
The event was attended by several senior military officials, including former Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Alwali Kazir (retd).
