Ghana’s Black Stars are now facing the prospect of hosting their remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations home qualifiers in Nigeria, according to multiple reports.
This situation arises after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi as a suitable venue, citing several structural concerns. CAF inspectors identified issues such as poor drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and patchy grass coverage, deeming the stadium unfit for international matches.
With other potential Ghanaian venues, including Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums, also failing to meet CAF’s standards, the country is left without an approved stadium for the upcoming qualifiers. As a result, CAF has instructed Ghana to secure an alternative venue for the crucial Matchday 3 and 4 fixtures in October, outside the country.
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, has emerged as the most likely option due to its 30,000-seat capacity and proximity. Other stadiums under consideration include Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium in Douala, and Morocco’s Berkane Municipal Stadium.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to make a final decision in the coming days.
