In the wake of the tragic collapse of the Centenary Building at Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) swiftly established an investigation panel.
The primary objective of this panel is to meticulously examine both the immediate and underlying causes behind the building’s collapse.
In response to this, the authorities of DMGS issued an official statement, affirming their commitment to cooperate fully with the investigation. Dr. Chijioke Ojji, the Director of Operations at DMGS Centenary, provided detailed insights into the construction process, offering what he termed “indisputable facts concerning the DMGS Centenary building”.
Dr. Ojji outlined the rigorous processes adhered to during the construction:
– **Approval Process**: The building plans were duly approved by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, which also conducted periodic inspections during construction.
– **Architectural and Structural Design**: Both the architectural and structural designs were handled by qualified professionals registered with relevant regulatory bodies.
– **Construction Supervision**: The construction was overseen by experienced engineers with extensive credentials.
– **Quality Assurance**: Materials used underwent rigorous quality assurance, including testing by the Anambra State Materials Testing Laboratory, Awka.
Expressing concern over premature and unfounded speculations in the media regarding the collapse, Dr. Ojji appealed for public restraint and patience. He emphasized the priority of ensuring safety and urged reliance on factual updates. Dr. Ojji urged the public to avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims and to await the diligent findings of the investigation panel.
