Police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have initiated a rigorous crackdown on vehicles found without proper number plates. In an official statement released on Saturday, Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, highlighted that this measure is a pivotal step in the ongoing efforts to combat crime within the region.

“The FCT Police Command has expressed grave concern over the increasing prevalence of motorists operating vehicles with either single or absent number plates within the territory,” the statement declared. Citing Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act of 2005, the command emphasized the legal obligation for vehicles to display clearly visible number plates during designated hours—from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The statement further underscored the link between unregistered vehicles and criminal activities such as ‘one chance’ armed robberies, which have raised significant public alarm. “The public outcry regarding these unlawful acts has prompted heightened scrutiny of law enforcement effectiveness in addressing such threats,” the statement noted.

In response to these concerns, Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, has issued a directive for immediate action. “CP Igweh has instructed for a decisive operation targeting vehicles without proper number plates, mandating their impoundment and the arrest and prosecution of the drivers,” the statement asserted. Additionally, stern warnings were issued to car dealers against unauthorized parking and violating the prescribed operational hours, with strict enforcement measures promised against offenders.

The directive aims to restore public confidence in law enforcement while ensuring enhanced safety and security across the Federal Capital Territory.
