In response to the rising wave of insecurity in Anambra State, the Bishop on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, has made a heartfelt plea to the Federal and Anambra State Governments to take immediate action to restore safety.
Speaking during an interview, Bishop Nwokolo expressed alarm over the recent abduction of Prof. Godwin Okpala, former Archbishop of the Province of Niger and Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, who was reportedly kidnapped in the early hours of Friday, December 6, 2924. He described the incident as shocking and indicative of a broader security crisis in the state.
The prelate lamented that insecurity is not only threatening lives but is also exacerbating the already dire economic conditions of Ndi Anambra. “In any society where there is no security, development is stunted, as fear paralyzes freedom of movement and daily activities,” he stated.
Bishop Nwokolo also noted that there may be other victims of kidnapping across the state whose cases have gone unreported. He urged the government to prioritize the safety of citizens and swiftly implement effective security measures to address the crisis.
While acknowledging reports of ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Government to improve security, he emphasized that these measures must yield visible results that provide relief to the people.
He appealed to both the Federal and State Governments to intensify their efforts, saying, “We need urgent action to safeguard lives and ensure that the people of Anambra can live without fear.”
The Bishop’s call comes amid growing concerns from residents over the state’s deteriorating security situation, which many say has reached a critical level.
