Union Secondary School Eha-Amufu in Isi-Uzo LGA, Enugu State, witnessed a historic moment today as the Anglican Mission, in partnership with the Enugu State Ministry of Education, officially assumed management of the school.
In what marks the fulfillment of a long-standing appeal, the Eha-Amufu Diocesan Education Board formally took over the administration of Union Secondary School, signaling the return of schools to the Anglican Mission in the region. The event attracted a wide range of guests, including educators, community leaders, students, and staff, all of whom shared in the excitement of the occasion.
Students and staff had been eager to address rumors that the Anglican Mission might impose religious doctrines or make drastic changes to the school’s operations. However, officials were quick to reassure everyone that Union Secondary School would remain a public institution, and not a denominational one.
Speaking at the event, the Anglican Bishop of Eha-Amufu Diocese, Rt. Rev’d Daniel Nkemjika Olinya, emphasized that “the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” The Bishop also highlighted the importance of discipline in shaping the future of students, noting that the social challenges we face today are rooted in the failure to instill strong values in young people. He assured the gathering that positive changes would be seen in the school across all aspects, from academics to infrastructure.
Bishop Olinya also used the occasion to announce a series of scholarships and academic incentives, including the reintroduction of mock exams for SS3 students, which will be enhanced to better prepare them for the WAEC and NECO exams. The best-performing students in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Igbo will be generously rewarded.
In his remarks, Venerable Godwin Anene Ugorji, the current Principal of Union Secondary School Eha-Amufu, expressed his commitment to bringing substantial improvements to the school. He thanked the Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, for placing their trust in the Anglican Mission to manage the school. The Principal assured both staff and students that no drastic changes, such as altering uniforms or dismissing teachers, would take place. Instead, he emphasized the church’s intention to work in partnership with the government to improve the school’s overall standards.
Other speakers at the event, including the Vice Principal of Academics, Mrs. Celine Nwakaego Odo, and the Senior Prefect, also expressed optimism that the new management would create a more conducive learning environment and address the previous issues of infrastructural decay and moral challenges among students.
In a heartwarming moment, an SS1 student, Miss Ugwu Esther Nmesoma, was awarded a scholarship covering her tuition and examination fees for the next three years, including her WAEC and NECO registration, in recognition of her outstanding project work. Other guests at the event also presented her with generous gifts.
Today’s ceremony marks a new chapter for Union Secondary School Eha-Amufu, and the community looks forward to the positive changes promised by the Anglican Mission.
