TOPIC: LABOURERS ARE FEW
TEXT: Luke 10:1-9 (NKJV)
10:1 After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.
10:2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly [is] great, but the laborers [are] few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
10:3 “Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.
10:4 “Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road.
10:5 “But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
10:6 “And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.
10:7 “And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
10:8 “Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
10:9 “And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
STUDY:
Today, we commemorate the ministry of Luke the Evangelist. Luke was a physician, a notable evangelist, and a close companion of Paul in his missionary work. When many of Paul’s close associates—Demas, Crescens, Titus—abandoned him, Paul testified that only Luke remained with him (2 Timothy 4:10-11). Luke is also said to have assisted Paul in establishing new disciples at Philippi.
In today’s passage, we see the burden in Jesus’ heart for genuine laborers in the harvest field of the Lord. Jesus lamented, “The harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few.” This concern is still relevant to true Christian leaders today. There are too many hirelings in ministry, whose focus is on earthly things and whose god is their belly, as Paul lamented (Philippians 3:18-19). Jesus described such ministers as hirelings (John 10:12-13), working for pay but unwilling to labor or sacrifice for God’s kingdom.
True laborers, like St. Luke the Evangelist, are rare. The Lord instructs us to pray for God to send more laborers into the harvest field. The question is: are you a hireling, a laborer, or merely a spectator in God’s work?
PRAYER:
Father, send laborers into the harvest field and make me one of them. Amen.
CONCLUSION:
The life and ministry of St. Luke the Evangelist exemplify the dedication and sacrifice that true laborers in God’s kingdom should demonstrate. As Jesus pointed out, the harvest is plentiful, but those willing to labor for it are few. Today, more than ever, the Church and the world need selfless laborers who will work not for personal gain, but for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
It is not enough to stand by as spectators or to serve as hirelings, motivated by earthly rewards. We are called to be faithful, dedicated laborers who, like St. Luke, remain committed to God’s mission, even in the face of challenges. Let us heed the Lord’s call to pray for more laborers and be ready to answer that call ourselves.
