TOPIC: BEWARE OF SATAN’S HALF TRUTH
TEXT: Matthew 4:5-7(NKJV)
- 4:5. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
- 4:6. and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In [their] hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ “
- 4:7. Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ “
STUDY:
In our text today, we see the tempter – the devil – coming with another temptation. He quoted the Scripture to Jesus Christ, but out of context. He told Jesus to display his Sonship by throwing himself down from a pinnacle because the scriptures said that angels were given charge to protect him.
Jesus rejected his temptation because He did not come to show off and God did not promise protection to people who tempt him by acting foolishly. When Scriptures are quoted out of context, they become half-truth and poison to the receiver. This is similar to what happens when wvrongly prescribed drugs are given to patients.
Sometimes, we see people quoting “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God,”when they want to strengthen their position regarding idol worship. Many false teachers and prophets today are sending many simple-hearted believers to hell because of erroneous teachings on salvation, prosperity, Christianity without holiness and persecution etc., (Rom. 16:17-18).
It is possiblefor one to have a head knowledge of the Scripture and not know God. The only way to avoid counterfeit is to be very familiar with the genuine. We should be thoroughly equipped in the word of God like our Master Jesus. to gain victory over temptations..
PRAYER:
Deliver me Lord from false teachers and help me to be more committed to the diligent study of your word in Jesus name, Amen
