Topic: A FAITHFUL STEWARD IN GOD’S PLAN

Text: Ruth 3:1-18

3:1 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you?

3:2  Now Boaz, whose young women you were with, is he not our relative? In fact, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor.

3:3   Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

3:4   Then it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies; and you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what you should do.”

3:5  And she said to her, “All that you say to me I will do.

3:6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her.

3:7  And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was cheerful, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

3:8 Now it happened at midnight that the man was startled, and turned himself; and there, a woman was lying at his feet.

3:9  And he said, “Who are you?” So she answered, “I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative.”

3:10  Then he said, “Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter! For you have shown more kindness at the end than at the beginning, in that you did not go after young men, whether poor or rich.

3:11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.

3:12 Now it is true that I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I.

3:13 Stay this night, and in the morning it shall be that if he will perform the duty of a close relative for you—good; let him do it. But if he does not want to perform the duty for you, then I will perform the duty for you, as the Lord lives! Lie down until morning.”

3:14 So she lay at his feet until morning, and she arose before one could recognize another. Then he said, “Do not let it be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.”

3:15 Also he said, “Bring the shawl that is on you and hold it.” And when she held it, he measured six ephahs of barley, and laid it on her. Then she went into the city.

3:16 When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “Is that you, my daughter?” Then she told her all that the man had done for her.

3:17  And she said, “These six ephahs of barley he gave me; for he said to me, ‘Do not go empty-handed to your mother-in-law.’ ”

3:18 Then she said, “Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; for the man will not rest until he has concluded the matter this day.”

STUDY:

Our Bible text reveals a powerful story of trust, obedience, and divine providence for those who are considered faithful stewards. In our reading, we observe that Naomi advised Ruth to approach Boaz, the family’s kinsman-redeemer, for marriage. It also reveals how Ruth courageously followed Naomi’s guidance, and humbly presented herself at Boaz’s feet. Her actions reflect deep humility, faith, and submission to God’s plan. Again, we see Boaz, a man of integrity, responding with kindness and honour. He acknowledged Ruth’s noble character and promised to act in her best interest while ensuring that the proper legal processes were followed. This moment emphasises God’s providence in arranging events and relationships to fulfil His purposes.

Ruth’s faith and obedience remind us to trust God even in uncertain times. She took a bold step, not knowing the outcome, but her trust in God and respect for Naomi’s wisdom, led to blessings. Similarly, Boaz’s integrity highlights the importance of being faithful stewards of our roles in God’s plans. This passage encourages Christians to seek godly wisdom, act with humility, and trust God’s timing, understanding that He works through ordinary acts of faithfulness to bring about extraordinary blessings. Let us walk in obedience, knowing God’s plans are always for our good and His glory.

Prayer

Heavenly father; grant me grace to walk in obedience, knowing that you areworkingfor my good.

STUDY:

In today’s text, we see a beautiful display of God’s care through the seemingly ordinary acts of human kindness. Ruth, after gleaning in the fields of Boaz, returns home to Naomi with an abundance of grain, a provision that surpasses their immediate needs. This act of abundance is a reminder of God’s faithful provision for His people, even in difficult circumstances. We are equally reminded of how Naomi recognised Boaz’s kindness and revealed that he was a close relative, a potential redeemer. This revelation filled her with hope, signaling a turning point from despair to anticipation of God’s plan unfolding. Ruth’s diligence, humility, and faithfulness to Naomi are rewarded through God’s guidance and Boaz’s generosity.

This passage therefore challenges us to trust in God’s provision and timing, even when life seems dark. It also encourages us to be instruments of His kindness, like Boaz, who acted selflessly and with integrity. God often works through the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary, weaving our stories into His greater plan of redemption. Let us remain faithful, diligent, and hopeful, trusting that God is always at work, even in the smallest details of our lives.

Prayer

Oh God, help me in my walk with you to remain faithful, trusting that your plan for me is the best.
