Topic: JESUS IS THE CHRIST

Text: Matthew 16:13-20

16:13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

16:14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

16:15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16:16  Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

16:17   Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [a]prevail against it.

16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth [b]will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

16:20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

STUDY:

Today, the Church celebrates Saint Peter. By the revelation from God. Peter proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus Christ noted that this confession of Peter was the foundation on which the Church would be built. Although the name ‘Peter’ means ‘Rock’, the Church was to stand on Jesus as the sure foundation, as He is equally the Builder of His Church (v.18).

The keys of the kingdom of heaven have been handed over to the Church by the Lord Jesus Christ such that her voice is honoured on earth and in heaven (v.19). There is no confusion-Jesus Christ is the Owner of His Church, and no human contention can change this eternal truth.

Beloved in Christ, Jesus Christ is the Messiah (The Anointed One). In spite of many popular confusions and diverse opinions about Christ, especially in our present day, He remains the Lord and Saviour of the world. This is the faith of the Church of God. Whatever has to do with faith comes from revelation, not a product of flesh and blood. Christians must live in the reality of this faith without shaking. The faith of the Church is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. This is the faith that can stand the test of time. There is no controversy, Jesus Christ is the Lord.

Prayer

Heavenly Father; grant me the grace to embrace the true faith in Jesus Christ.
