Choosing to play for Nigeria over England is a decision Ademola Lookman says transformed both his career and his identity.

The Super Eagles and Atalanta forward, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, initially represented England at youth level—featuring in the European U-19 Championship and helping the team win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. But in a recent interview with Arise TV, Lookman affirmed that embracing his Nigerian roots was one of the most rewarding decisions he’s ever made.

“Without a doubt. It changed my career and my life. People know that. This is my home; this is my place—Nigeria. I am the son of the soil,” he declared.

Now 27, Lookman credits his success to a daily commitment to self-discipline and hard work.

“I think just self-belief and working hard every day. When you do that, you build confidence and grow in what you do. And one day, you reap the rewards,” he said. “Whether it’s on or off the field, I just keep pushing to be better.”

Reflecting on his recent CAF award—crowning him African Footballer of the Year—Lookman expressed profound gratitude and humility.

“It’s amazing. It’s a privilege. I accept it with real pride because I’ve looked up to many great players who have won it. To now be among them is a true blessing,” he shared.

Lookman recently returned to Nigeria to present the award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu—a symbolic gesture of national pride. “I’m bringing it back to Lagos. I spent a lot of time in Phase 2 as a kid. It’s a privilege to bring it home,” he said.

Despite reaching significant milestones, Lookman is far from slowing down.

“Retirement? Not at all,” he said. “It’s a long journey ahead, and I still have so much more to accomplish. This is just another step along the way.”
