A man identified as Shuaibu Yushau, who was seen attempting to commit suicide atop a radio mast in Abuja on Monday morning, has been arrested by the Nigerian police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Earlier reports from SaharaReporters indicated that Yushau was spotted at the summit of the mast in Nigeria’s capital city.
A video captured the scene, and a suicide note left behind by Yushau was also discovered. Relevant agencies, including the Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency, and Federal Capital Territory officials, were deployed to rescue him.
Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT command, stated on Monday evening that Yushau is now in police custody and in stable condition.
“Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe at about 09:10am, the operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilized to the location,” Adeh said.
“With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau was prevented from taking his own life. He claimed to have been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. The suspect is presently in police custody and in stable condition.
“Further developments will be communicated in due course,” she added.
