The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended all train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route following a derailment that caused panic among passengers on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. at Kilometer 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations as the train was traveling from Abuja to Kaduna.

While there were no fatalities, six passengers sustained minor injuries and have received medical treatment.

The NRC’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment and the subsequent suspension of services, stating that emergency rescue teams were immediately deployed to the site to assist and safely transport all stranded passengers.

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a separate probe to determine the cause of the derailment and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Investigators are examining both the direct and underlying factors that led to the event.

In the meantime, the NRC has initiated the process of refunding tickets for all passengers who were on board the derailed train.
