Topic: WHAT ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH?

Text: 1 Kings 11:1-8

11:1    But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites

11:2 from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love.

11:3   And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.

11:4   For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not [a]loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.

11:5   For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom[b] the abomination of the Ammonites.

11:6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David.

11:7 Then Solomon built a [c]high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon.

11:8 And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

STUDY:

One major weakness of Solomon is his attraction to foreign women: “King Solomon was obsessed with women…” (1 Kings 11:1, MSG). What a man is obsessed with (if negative) can finish him before he finishes his assignment on earth. People are attracted today to many things ranging from alcohol to drugs, food, pleasure, power, titles and positions. Solomon’s passion for foreign women led his heart to be turned after other gods and his heart was no longer loyal to God. Whatever a man is obsessed with possesses, dominates and controls him. The goal of obsession is control.

Obsession can also be positive. For instance, unlike Solomon, David was obsessed with passion for God’s house and would not give his eyes rest until he found a dwelling place for the LORD (Psa. 132:4-5). On His part, Jesus was consumed by a passion and zeal for the house of God, the Temple (John 2:13-17). Until you are truly consumed with the kingdom of God, you will not be able to advance the kingdom of God and make a difference in life. This is because obsession is a driving force that rules life. Your obsession is also a pointer to the problem you are created to solve. It is a pointer to your assignment in life and destiny.

Prayer:

Father; please possess me with the passion for your kingdom.
