Nigerian gospel singer and pastor, Nathaniel Bassey, has become the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

Figures displayed on his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that it had accumulated more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The achievement comes more than 15 years after the gospel minister created the channel on March 4, 2011.

The milestone coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship programme founded by Bassey in June 2017.

The initiative, which began as a midnight worship session, has grown into an international Christian gathering, attracting participants from different countries through live broadcasts and recorded sessions.

The programme features sessions of praise, worship and prayers, with thousands of people participating in its live broadcasts and millions more accessing the recordings.

Bassey is widely known for gospel songs such as Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God, which have contributed to his growing audience in Nigeria and beyond.

The one-billion-view milestone reflects the combined reach of his music releases, worship sessions and online prayer gatherings.

The achievement has generated excitement among his followers, with some suggesting that the gospel minister could explore opportunities to monetise the growing audience of his online worship sessions.

However, Bassey has maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is primarily focused on worship and spiritual devotion rather than generating revenue.

The milestone further highlights the growing global reach of Nigerian gospel music and the influence of digital platforms in connecting Christian music ministers with audiences across geographical boundaries.
