Gunmen, on Tuesday night, killed 10 security personnel — including nine soldiers and a police officer — in a late-night attack in Kebbi State.
The incident happened in Giro Masa community, located in Shanga Local Government Area, where the attackers reportedly ambushed troops, set two military vehicles ablaze, and left several civilians dead or injured.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the incident on Wednesday after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.
Describing the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” he mourned the fallen officers, noting that they died while protecting lives.
“This is a deeply painful and unfortunate incident. These brave soldiers and the police officer were on duty, defending our people. It is tragic that they lost their lives in such circumstances,” he said.
The governor assured that the state government would take responsibility for the treatment of injured victims and support the families of those who lost their lives.
“We will not abandon the families of these heroes… and ensure that the families of the deceased are supported,” he added.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, stressing that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
Following the hospital visit, the governor proceeded to the affected community for an on-the-spot assessment, as security operations intensified in the area.
Shanga and nearby communities have experienced repeated attacks in recent months, often linked to banditry and cross-border crimes due to the state’s proximity to the Niger Republic.
The latest attack has raised fresh concerns, with residents calling for stronger security presence and improved intelligence to prevent further violence.
