Topic: THE REWARD OF FAITHFULNESS

Text: Ruth 4:7-12

4:7  Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel.

4:8  Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

4:9   And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.

4:10   Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

4:11  And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

4:12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.

STUDY:

In the ancient history of Israel, transfer of prosperity or rights is finalised in handing over one’s sandals to another. This was a method of legalising transactions in Israel. Having received such rights, Boaz then informed the brethren and all those who were present to witness that he had bought all that belonged to Elimelech and his sons. This gave Boaz the right to marry Ruth, the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as his wife, and to keep alive the posterity of Elimelech.

At the ceremony, the people blessed Boaz and Ruth and asked that God would make them as fruitful and prosperous like Rachel and Leah who together, built up the family of Israel (vv. 10-11).
Ruth’s faithfulness is finally rewarded. From this, we observe that God uses the common events in our lives to show His activities in the life of man. He can also use every circumstances of life that come our way to fulfil His purpose and give us peace and rest, and restore every lost glory in our lives and families. Faithfulness and devotion are signs of loyalty in the midst of adversity and uncertainty.

Prayer

Dear Lord, may my faith not fail when I face negative circumstances. Keep me strong to the end so I can rejoice in your salvation and blessings. Amen
