Topic: OUR TRANSFORMATION

Text:Matthew 17:1-13

7:1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves;

7:2   and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

7:3  And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

7:4  Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, [a]let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

7:5  While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

7:6   And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.

7:7  But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.”

7:8  When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

7:9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”

7:10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

7:11 Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming [b]first and will restore all things.

7:12 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.”

7:13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.

STUDY:

“Out text today begins with the time transfiguration of Jesus occurred “after six days” (v. l). What happened then, I supposed, was the discussion in Matthew 16:21 when Jesus informed His disciples of His suffering, death and resurrection. This certainly didn’t go down well with them as seen in Peter’s response in Matthew 16:22. To them, Christ, the Son of God, shouldn’t suffer pain and death. They were discouraged, and had doubts about Jesus’ true identity. To encourage them, Jesus scheduled a mountain top experience. This higher level of intimacy and communion with God in a separated place, revealed the divine nature of Jesus, as his flesh was transformed into a glorious body. The presence of Moses and Elijah aIso indicated their affirmation of Christ as the fulfilment of the law and the prophets. Having been reassured, the disciples expressed their conviction of the deity and divinity of Christ in John 1:14 and 2 Peter 1:16.

When life’s complications and confusion bring doubt and uncertainty on our faith and beliefs, we, like the disciples, must remember that we are called up to a place of higher intimacy and communion with God, for our transfiguration which is accomplished by the renewal of our minds. And by intimate fellowship with unveiled faces beholding the glory of the Lord, we are transformed into the same image, from glory to glory.

Prayer

Lord, please bring me into a higher level of intimacy and communion with you so that my life will be transformed. Amen.
