All Souls’ Day

TOPIC: RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD

TEXT: John 5:21-29(NKJV)

5:21.  “For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to [them,] even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

5:22.  “For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,

5:23.  “that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

5:24.  ” Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

5:25.  “Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.

5:26.  “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

5:27.  “and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.

5:28.  “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice

5:29.  “and come forth — those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

STUDY:

All Soul’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate the life and ministry of other saints, who are not canonized, people who have slept in the Lord and are now awaiting the resurrection morning. In today’s passage Jesus speaks about the events of the End Time. Notably, He speaks about resurrection of the dead in Christ and His ability to both resurrect the dead and also judge them (v 21-22, 26-27). However, resurrection is not only limited to the dead in Christ, unbelievers also will resurrect (v 28,29). The kind of resurrection that each man will experience is dependent on the kind of life he lived before death. There is no short-cut to living a fulfilling Christian life outside total attachment to Christ. Jesus was united with God and lived as God wanted him to. As we identify with Jesus, we must honor him and live as He wants us to live (v.23). We should learn to subject our lives and will to the will of God. Notice that those that believe in God and his word will not be subjected to judgment (v.24). Just pause and reflect over your life. Are you really on the Lord’s side? Do not overlook the call for total obedience to God’s word.

PRAYER:

Help me Lord to totally subject my life and my will to you, Amen!
