Profile Of Venerable Boma Peter Briggs, PhD, Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of Kalabari

Venerable Boma Peter Briggs, born on 21st February 1966, is a seasoned Anglican cleric, administrator, educator, and researcher whose life has been devoted to the service of God, the Church, and society. He is a native of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area in Rivers State. 

He began his educational journey at St. Joseph State School, Abonnema (1974–1979), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate, and proceeded to Government Secondary School, Abissa (1980–1986), where he earned the West African Senior School Certificate. 

His academic pursuits reflect a blend of theology, education, and management. He studied at the University of Ibadan where he received the National Certificate of Education in Accounting (1987–1990). He furthered his theological training at Trinity Theological College, Umuahia (1994–1996) and later earned a Diploma in Theology (2015–2017). 

To complement his educational background, he obtained a Bachelor of Education in Marketing (Second Class Upper) from Rivers State College of Education, Ibadan (2001–2004), and advanced to earn a master’s degree in Educational Management from Rivers State University of Science and Technology (2006–2008). 

His academic excellence culminated in the award of a Ph.D. in Education Management and Planning from Rivers State University (2017–2020). He also holds a Certificate of Attendance from the Church of Nigeria (2013) and continues his theological growth with a Bachelor of Theology.

Ven. Briggs answered the call to ministry, when he was made Deacon in 1996 and ordained a priest in 1997 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Diobu Garrison, Port Harcourt in Niger Delta North Diocese. He began pastoral service at Christ Church Interdenominational, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt (1997–1999), and served as Curate and later Vicar at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Kalio-Ama (1999–2001). His ministry extended beyond Rivers State when he was appointed Assistant Resident Minister at Christ Church Interdenominational, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State (2002–2004). He went on to serve as Vicar of St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Emago-Kugbo (2005–2009), Curate at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Hospital Road, Port Harcourt (2009–2010), and Vicar of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Borokiri, Port Harcourt (2010–2014).

In addition to parish duties, Ven. Briggs has served in educational leadership, notably as Principal of Nyemoni Grammar School, Abonnema (2014–2016). He later returned to pastoral ministry as Vicar of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt (2016–2019), before rising to the position of Archdeacon, District Superintendent, and Vicar of Kalabari Central Archdeaconry (St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Abonnema) between 2019 and 2022. In 2023, he was appointed Vicar and Rector of St. Peter’s Deanery Church, Port Harcourt, a position he continues to hold with dedication.

His vocational development has been marked by steady growth and recognition. He was installed as a Canon in 2004, and collated Archdeacon in the Niger Delta Diocese in 2010, completed an Advanced Course in Church Ministry in 2013, and was appointed Chaplain of the Prison Ministry in the Niger Delta Diocese in 2010. 

He also received a Certificate of Holy Christian Pilgrimage from Immanuel Tours in 2004, and in 2024 was appointed Chaplain to Corpers and Anglican Students in Tertiary Institutions. In 2023, he attained the office of Rector in the Niger Delta Diocese.

Ven. Briggs is also active in leadership and community service. He is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Garden City Hymn Singing Initiative, a Member of the Board of Management Committee of the Christian Council Project and has served as Vice Chairman of the CCN Phalga and Chairman of the CCN Akulga Branch. 

He has also held key roles such as Member and Procurement Head of the Nyemoni Palliative Committee, Abonnema, and Chief of Trinity Theological College, Umuahia. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC), reflecting his recognition as a professional in education and administration.

Alongside his clerical and leadership commitments, Ven. Briggs is an accomplished academic and researcher. He has published widely in international journals on themes such as financial management, education finance, school administration, funding and planning, student motivation, teaching methods, and instructional facilities. 

His notable works include ‘Financial Management and Practices for Principals on Quality Service Delivery in Secondary Schools in Rivers State’ (2018), ‘Managing Education Finance for Quality Service Delivery in Secondary Schools’ (2018), and ‘Funding as Correlates of Effective Management of Higher Education in Rivers State’ (2019). Through these contributions, he has enriched both the fields of education management and policy studies.

Beyond his professional and ministerial commitments, Ven. Briggs enjoys writing, reading, public speaking, preaching, and travelling. These passions complement his vocation as a preacher and leader, allowing him to continue touching lives both within and outside the Church.

Ven. Boma Peter Briggs stands today as a well-rounded cleric, administrator, and scholar whose ministry, academic achievements, and leadership continue to inspire both the Church and the society he serves. 

He is married to Mrs. Helen T.B Briggs and their union is blessed with four children, Peter, Helen, Micheal & Mark. He is fluent in both Kalabari and English, and is widely respected for his deep sense of honor, creativity, commitment, and excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
