The University of Lagos has announced a major academic shake-up with the creation of eight new faculties and rearrangement of six existing ones.

This is in response to the growing demand for specialized skills and to align with global trends.

The update was publicized in an official statement published on the university’s website on Friday, August 1.

“In our continuous drive to expand knowledge, foster innovation, and prepare students for the evolving future, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has unbundled some previously loved faculties to establish new faculties and programmes aimed at meeting the needs of a dynamic world,” the statement read in part.

“With this expansion of our academic family from twelve (12) to nineteen (19) faculties, we hope to spark a renewed drive for discovery and innovation in our students and faculty alike.

“These additions reflect our renewed commitment to broadening horizons, deepening expertise, and shaping leaders who will reimagine the future. In deed, and In Truth, with this bold step into the future, UNILAG will be shaping thinkers, creators, leaders and change-makers who will take on the world with knowledge and compassion.”

The recently approved faculties include the Faculty of Management Sciences, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Media and Communication, and the Faculty of Computing and Robotics.

The new Faculty of Environmental Sciences will now house the Department of Architecture, which was formerly under the Faculty of Engineering.

Additionally, the Department of Estate Management and the Department of Quantity Surveying, previously part of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, have been moved to the new Faculty of Management Sciences.

The new Faculty of Media and Communication brings together a range of related disciplines, including the Department of Mass Communication and the Department of Cinematography. This move is designed to create a more integrated and comprehensive approach to media education.

Finally, the new Faculty of Computing and Robotics will focus on cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and software engineering. This faculty aims to prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving technology sector.
