A recent wave of bandit attacks across Guma and Gwer West Local Government Areas of Benue State has resulted in multiple fatalities, including a prominent local leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), James Akase.

The assaults, which occurred on Monday, May 19, 2025, have reawakened fears among residents already struggling with persistent insecurity.

It was confirmed that James Akase, a former PDP Ward Chairman from Gwer West LGA, was among those tragically killed.

Victor Ormin,  the Gwer West Local Government Chairman, confirmed Akase’s death, stating that he was killed on his farm while seeking provisions. Ormin also disclosed that another individual was kidnapped in the area on the same day but was later released after a ransom payment.

In Guma LGA, three other individuals lost their lives in separate attacks.

Efforts to obtain official statements from Guma LGA Chairman, Maurice Orwough, and Benue State Police Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful.

These renewed attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges faced by farming communities in Benue State, where armed herders and bandits continue to cause widespread displacement and loss of life. The incidents have left many injured, with survivors currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the affected areas.
