The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2024 Second Series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.

The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement signed by WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosore Adesina. According to the statement, 68,342 candidates registered for the exam, reflecting a 20% decline from 2023. Out of this number, 65,023 candidates sat for the examination across 5,067 centers nationwide, including 157 candidates with special needs, such as those with visual and hearing impairments and albinism.

WAEC reported that 34,878 candidates (53.64%) secured credit passes in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. Meanwhile, 43,923 candidates (67.55%) passed five or more subjects, irrespective of English and Mathematics.

A breakdown of performance by gender revealed that 17,992 female candidates (51.58%) met the minimum credit requirement, compared to 16,886 males (48.41%).

Additionally, 95.90% of candidates had their results fully processed and released. However, 2,669 candidates (4.10%) had some subjects still being processed due to errors on their part.

WAEC also disclosed that the results of 2,577 candidates (3.96%) were withheld over suspected examination malpractice. Affected candidates were advised to visit the council’s online complaints portal for further inquiries, as their cases will be reviewed before final decisions are made by WAEC’s committee.

The 2024 exam, conducted between October 25 and December 20, introduced a hybrid model, allowing candidates to choose between traditional paper-based testing and a computer-based format during registration.
