βπTEXT: Genesis 15:1-21
After this, the word of theΒ LordΒ came to AbramΒ in a vision:
βDo not be afraid,Β Abram.
I am your shield,[a]
your very great reward.[b]β
2Β But Abram said, βSovereignΒ Lord,Β what can you give me since I remain childlessΒ and the one who will inherit[c]Β my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?βΒ 3Β And Abram said, βYou have given me no children; so a servantΒ in my householdΒ will be my heir.β
4Β Then the word of theΒ LordΒ came to him: βThis man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.βΒ 5Β He took him outside and said, βLook up at the sky and count the starsβif indeed you can count them.β Then he said to him, βSo shall your offspring[d]Β be.β
6Β Abram believed theΒ Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
7Β He also said to him, βI am theΒ Lord, who brought you outΒ of Ur of the ChaldeansΒ to give you this land to take possession of it.β
8Β But Abram said, βSovereignΒ Lord,Β how can I knowΒ that I will gain possession of it?β
9Β So theΒ LordΒ said to him, βBring me a heifer,Β a goat and a ram, each three years old,Β along with a dove and a young pigeon.β
10Β Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;Β the birds, however, he did not cut in half.Β 11Β Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,Β but Abram drove them away.
12Β As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,Β and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.Β 13Β Then theΒ LordΒ said to him, βKnow for certain that for four hundred yearsΒ your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslavedΒ and mistreated there.Β 14Β But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come outΒ with great possessions.Β 15Β You, however, will go to your ancestorsΒ in peace and be buried at a good old age.Β 16Β In the fourth generationΒ your descendants will come back here,Β for the sin of the AmoritesΒ has not yet reached its full measure.β
17Β When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torchΒ appeared and passed between the pieces.Β 18Β On that day theΒ LordΒ made a covenant with AbramΒ and said, βTo your descendants I give this land,Β from the Wadi[e]Β of EgyptΒ to the great river, the EuphratesβΒ 19Β the land of the Kenites,Β Kenizzites, Kadmonites,Β 20Β Hittites,Β Perizzites,Β Rephaites,Β 21Β Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.β
βπSTUDY: Today may be challenging, but we expect a brighter tomorrow. Do not ever allow your present challenges in life to limit your confidence in God – He is working out His purposes for you. The fear of the unknown or assumed present reality may have put Abram to confusion in our text. God intervened by giving him assurance of a secured future. While Abram was disturbed of not having a child, God promised him descendants too numerous to imagine.
Do not fear what the future holds for you; trust God who holds the future. He has promised to help you (Isa. 41:10). Cheer up, you are safe, and your future is well secured under God. Out of that present challenge, you will give a special testimony. God will change the bitter water to a sweet one (Exo. 15:13-25). God will bless you in life beyond your imaginations; just trust and obey Him as Abram did. Your miracles are on the way, so do not give up. It is well with you.
βπPRAYER: In faith, thank God for turning things around for your good and for the good of your family.
