An accident involving a tanker has claimed two lives on the Karu Bridge along the Abuja- Keffi expressway.
This incident occurred barely a day after a tanker carrying petrol exploded at the same location, destroying several vehicles and claiming 10 lives.
Jaji Abduganiyu, the controller general of the Federal Fire Service, explained that the trailer which was transporting fertilizer, lost the brakes and crashed on the highway.
The incident resulted in the death of two individuals and could have become another disaster if not for the swift intervention of the Federal Fire Service.
He said the crash worsened the situation on the already congested highway following the explosion from the previous day.
He also said that the fire operatives had singled out a tanker -caught up in the congestion on the road-leaking petrol on the ground.
He said his men recognizing the imminent danger, deployed foam compound over the fuels spill. Their quick acting prevented another deadly explosion.
“The potential for explosion was high, especially with vehicles in the vicinity that could ignite the volatile fuel.”
“This quick and decisive action by my dogged firefighters undoubtedly saved lives and kept the situation from spiraling into an even greater disaster,” Abduganiyu added.
He extended sympathy to the families of the victims and drummed on the need for extra caution in high risk areas.
Abduganiyu assured the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to swift emergency responses, ensuring that such tragedies do not escalate into even worse consequences.
