President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, increasing their salaries by between 30 and 80 per cent as part of efforts to improve troop welfare.
The salary adjustment, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to Onanuga, the salary increase is structured on a graduated scale, with junior personnel receiving the highest percentage increases, while senior officers from the rank of Colonel to General will receive a 30 per cent increase.
President Tinubu said the welfare of military personnel remained a priority for his administration, stressing that those responsible for safeguarding the country deserved adequate support and recognition.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” he said.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Armed Forces through improved welfare, better weapons and advanced technological equipment.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” Tinubu stated.
He noted that national security remained central to his administration’s development agenda, adding that no nation could attain greatness without ensuring the safety of lives and property.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.
Tinubu urged members of the Armed Forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their sacrifices and dedication to the nation.
“Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President added.
