Amid the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
In a statement personally signed and released on Wednesday, Fubara reaffirmed that his leadership has been guided by constitutional duty and a commitment to protecting lives, property, and the progress of the state.
“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility as we navigate this unfortunate chapter in our state’s political history. Since assuming office, we have prioritized security, stability, and the rule of law, always placing the interests of our people first,” he stated.
Fubara emphasized that his administration acted in good faith following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, swiftly implementing the agreed resolutions, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned. He also noted that his government complied immediately with the Supreme Court’s judgment once the certified true copy was received, all in a bid to restore normalcy.
“These steps were not taken for personal gain but to promote peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State. Unfortunately, at every turn, the Rivers State House of Assembly has obstructed our efforts, making genuine progress difficult,” he added.
Despite political differences, Fubara maintained that governance remained on track, with salaries being paid, key projects progressing, and the state remaining secure and stable under his leadership.
“As Rivers people, we are resilient. I urge everyone to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure Rivers State continues to thrive. We must approach this moment with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he concluded.
Fubara’s statement follows President Tinubu’s Tuesday declaration of a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of the governor, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all state lawmakers.
In a nationwide broadcast, Tinubu justified his decision as a necessary measure to restore stability amid the prolonged political standoff between the governor and the legislature. He also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state’s administrator to oversee governance.
