Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate has taken a swipe at the economical reforms of President Tinubu. He said that the president has been in the office for two years and the change effected is very visible.
Obi, who was a guest on Arise News Prime Time on Tuesday, said he would have done better and significant change would have been made in key areas like education and health.
When asked to assess the present government, the former governor said the President is doing exactly what he promised. From the increase in the dollar rate to the price of petrol.
“He is doing well, because what he promised the people is what he is doing. That he will start and continue from where the previous government stopped. Somebody who met a dollar at 400 and has now made it 1500, he is a doing fantastic,” he stated.
He further lamented on the state of the nation, saying there is no positive increase in productivity but rather a rising burden in national debt.
“The President has been in office for nearly two years, and look at the state of the economy. This shows that a leader can effect change within two years. If I were in charge, Nigerians would have seen significant improvements in key areas,” Obi said.
“I would confront corruption decisively and cut down on the cost of governance. Borrowed funds would be channeled into productive sectors.”
“We have a critical situation and we are not addressing. We have a country were out debt in 2015 was between 15 and 17 trillion and now we have a debt of 150 too 170 trillion.”
“A country where our cost of debt servicing is now higher than our budget for critical areas of development like education, health and pulling people out of poverty.”
On the possibility of him participating in 2027 presidential election, Obi kept a cautious stance, refusing to share anything in that regard but reemphasizing on the progress of the nation.
“I am not keen on discussing 2027 at this point. Any political alignment must focus on the countries future. The goal should be to invest in education and economic development and not just to seize power.”
