Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed relief and joy over the successful rescue of medical students and corps members who were kidnapped earlier this year.

Obi praised the efforts of security agencies involved in the operations.

The 20 medical students abducted in Benue State while en route to Enugu have been rescued. This operation was managed by the National Security Adviser’s office. Similarly, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Major General Yusha’u Ahmed, confirmed the rescue of eight prospective corps members kidnapped in Zamfara on August 17, 2023.

In a statement posted on his X handle, Obi extended his gratitude to the security forces and highlighted the need for greater preventative measures to combat such crimes. He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity and holding perpetrators accountable.

Obi’s statement read, “The successful rescue of the 20 medical students in Benue and the eight NYSC members in Zamfara brings relief and joy. I commend the security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and military personnel, for their commendable efforts.

“While celebrating these successes, I urge the government and security agencies to enhance their proactive measures to prevent future kidnappings and bring those responsible for such acts to justice. Until we decisively address insecurity, our nation will continue to face these challenges.

“Recent reports of attacks, such as the killing of 13 farmers in Niger State and the kidnapping of 10 individuals in Zamfara, underscore the urgent need for action. Insecurity must be tackled head-on. Our nation’s progress depends on effectively addressing these threats and ensuring the safety of our citizens. A safer, more secure Nigeria is indeed possible.”
