Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been invited by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to inspect its rehabilitated refineries, following his public criticism of the $2 billion investment in the facilities.
During a recent television interview, Obasanjo questioned the progress of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, drawing comparisons to challenges faced during his tenure.
“I was recently informed that since that time, over two billion dollars have been squandered on the refinery, and they still don’t work. If anyone tells you otherwise, why is Aliko still involved? Aliko will not only make his refinery work but also make it deliver,” Obasanjo stated.
In response, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, emphasized the company’s transformation and acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature as a respected national figure.
“President Olusegun Obasanjo is a revered statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s progress. His concerns are valid, but it is important to note that NNPC has evolved remarkably,” Soneye said.
Soneye highlighted the company’s transition from a loss-making entity to a profit-oriented global energy leader. He also explained that the ongoing refinery rehabilitations involve comprehensive upgrades to meet world-class standards, distinguishing them from the limited Turnaround Maintenance efforts of the past.
He credited the achievements to the leadership of the NNPC board, headed by Group CEO Mele Kyari, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative energy policies.
Extending the invitation, Soneye said, “We warmly welcome President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and this visit will provide an opportunity to witness the significant progress we have made under NNPC Limited’s leadership.”
