A somber service of songs saw friends and family members throng the Amagada residence on Wednesday, January 11th, 2023.
In his sermon, the Vicar of All Souls Anglican Church Benin, Venerable Ifuero Osamwonyi said Mr. Amagada lived a life worthy of emulation. He asked the Dickson-Amagada family to stand in faith – noting that Mr. Amagada was resting in the bosom of the Lord. Present at the Service of Songs were the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin (UNIBEN), Professor Emeritus Andrew Onokerhoraye, former staff members of UNIBEN, family, friends and well-wishers.
The remains of Mr. Dickson Amagada then left Benin for his hometown Emede in Isoko-South LGA of Delta state. On Saturday January 14th, a brief lying-in-state was held at Amagada family compound, along Emede-Igbide road, Uru-Emede. This event was a strict family affair. After the lying-in-state, a funeral service was held at St.Paul’s Anglican church, Uru-Emede after which he was interred.
In a sermon delivered at the service,Venerable Robert Oziwele Vicar, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, said the departure of Mr. Amagada was not just a painful blow to the people of Emede, but also the Isoko ethnic nationality as a whole. He inferred that Mr. Amagada lived a very eventful life that was characterized with love for humanity. He said Mr. Amagada lived an exemplary life and would be sorely missed.
Mr. Dickson Amagada was then interred and committed to mother earth in his compound. A brief reception was also held at the same venue.
In his lifetime, Mr. Dickson Amagada was seen as a man of many parts who indeed touched lives.
He belonged to the second generation of Nigerian broadcasters, working as a presenter with the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) – the forerunner of today’s Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and Voice of Nigeria (VON). He then left the media to become Assistant Registrar of the University of Ife, now the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, creating the first public affairs unit within Nigeria’s University system which has become a mainstay.
He was actively involved in Nigerian politics both in the second, third and fourth republics respectively
A committed Anglican, Mr. Amagada played active roles in the Diocese of Benin and Abuja, notably, All Souls Anglican Church, Benin-City, and All Saints Anglican Church, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
He is survived by his wife and board member, Advent Cable Network Nigeria Television (ACNNTV), Mrs. Bisi Amagada, children Rovieno and Mazino, grand-daughter Vanessa Ewomaoghene, brothers, sister and relations.
