Bishop Joseph Akinfenwa of the Ibadan Diocese has sounded the alarm over the deepening food scarcity in Nigeria, warning that it could soon ignite violent crises if urgent action is not taken.
Speaking during the 35th Anniversary Thanksgiving sermon of the Abuja Diocese on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at The Cathedral Church of The Advent, Life Camp, Gwarinpa, the Bishop emphasized the growing desperation among citizens. “There is hunger in the land, and if not addressed, it may lead to chaos,” he declared.
Invited by Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, Bishop Akinfenwa criticized the government’s perceived insensitivity to the plight of the masses. He noted that hunger was worsening daily, with citizens increasingly pleading for intervention: “Who is going to help Nigeria?”
He also expressed concern over the country’s mounting debt, questioning why loans were continually sought from the same sources without clear signs of using the funds to ease the people’s suffering. “Up to now, we don’t even know how much the country owes,” he said.
Bishop Akinfenwa concluded his sermon by reminding national leaders of divine accountability, warning that “God’s judgment is at the door.”
