Foreign mercenaries’ involvement in the forthcoming nationwide protest has been highlighted by Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Egbetokun disclosed that this information was obtained through reliable intelligence. Recent reports have indicated that a youth-led nationwide protest is being organized in response to the country’s economic difficulties.
Scheduled to begin on August 1, the protest, spearheaded by unidentified organizers, has prompted pleas from both federal and state governments, including President Bola Tinubu, for the youth to reconsider. Additionally, religious and traditional leaders have urged for the cancellation of the demonstration.
The military and the Department of State Services (DSS) have expressed concerns that the protest might be used as a pretext for violence. Egbetokun warned that holding a protest at this juncture could be poorly timed and validated the concerns of those opposing the protest due to potential manipulation by hostile entities.
“We have verified these concerns with credible intelligence indicating the participation of foreign mercenaries in this protest,” Egbetokun stated. “We urge Nigerians to exercise caution and think carefully before joining any protest group, as some factions may seek to exploit the situation for disruption.”
While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the police will provide security during the protest and caution against groups aiming to destabilize the country or use the protest for criminal activities.
