Encouraging Nigerians to support the national effort towards sustainable energy, the Federal Government is urging citizens to embrace locally-assembled CNG vehicles. This initiative aims to alleviate the strain on Premium Motor Spirit and diesel consumption across the country.
Following the removal of fuel subsidies, the government allocated N100 billion for the acquisition of 5,500 CNG vehicles (including buses and tricycles), 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits. This initiative also includes the establishment of CNG refilling stations and electric charging facilities.
President Bola Tinubu has additionally encouraged Nigerians to support the CNG initiative.
Reiterating the government’s stance, Oluwemimo Osanipin, Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), highlighted the cost-effectiveness of CNG for Nigerians. During a visit to the Lanre Shittu assembly plant in Lagos, Osanipin urged Nigerians to opt for locally-assembled CNG vehicles, emphasizing their economic benefits. He stated, “CNG will save us from higher expenses. A CNG vehicle can cover over 300 kilometers with just 60k of fuel, far surpassing petrol or diesel options.”
Osanipin underscored the readiness of the automotive industry to transition from vehicle assembly to component production within Nigeria. He noted, “We are here to assess and expand operations, moving towards more localized production. Our goal is to see more components manufactured locally.”
Regarding government support for assemblers, Osanipin highlighted the directive for all government ministries, departments, and agencies to procure CNG-powered vehicles. “Our primary support is through patronage, not only by the government but by all Nigerians,” he emphasized.
Taiwo Shittu, CEO of Lanre Shittu Motors, echoed support for the CNG initiative, stressing its potential to reduce fuel costs by 75%. He advised motorists to prioritize vehicles assembled in Nigeria, citing the importance of accessible after-sales services and spare parts availability.
In conclusion, Osanipin and Shittu emphasized the collective effort needed to promote the CNG initiative and strengthen Nigeria’s automotive sector.
