Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, revealed that the state government had formulated plans for a N70,000 minimum wage three years ago, recognizing early signs indicating economic challenges ahead. The decision was prompted by concerns over the direction of the economy.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki made these remarks during the presentation of the Award for Exceptional Courage in Leadership by the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine in Benin City.

Obaseki emphasized that the state had prepared for the increase in minimum wage when he began raising concerns about the Federal Government’s excessive borrowings to meet its obligations. He stated, “We can pay the N70,000 minimum wage because we planned for it over the last three years, foreseeing a day like this would come.”

Godwin Obaseki expressed gratitude for being vindicated, attributing their success to sincerity and perseverance despite challenges. He highlighted the prospects for a better economy and transparent governance in Edo State, emphasizing the institutional reforms implemented to enhance state management.

“We thank God that we have been vindicated today, as our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. We see prospects for a better economy and transparent government in Edo State because of the institutional reforms we have introduced to better manage the State,” Obaseki stated.

He further emphasized the support and endorsement of the majority of Edo people for the government’s actions. Obaseki noted, “We have always prevailed because the majority of Edo people understand, appreciate, and endorse what our government has done. This has been the reason for the courage with which we have tackled any problem we faced along the way.”

Regarding the state’s trajectory, Obaseki expressed confidence, stating, “For the next few months that are left for our administration, we will finish strong. We will finish all that we have started.” He announced plans to establish a transition team to document and present all achievements, projects, and undertakings for the next administration.
