Following the recent cholera outbreak in several states, the National President of the Pest Control Association of Nigeria, Olakunle Williams, has advised Nigerians to thoroughly cook food and consume it while it is still hot.

In a statement , the association expressed concern over the outbreak of the disease and emphasised the urgent need for immediate and concerted efforts to prevent further spread by safeguarding public health.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera and spread through contaminated water and food.

Symptoms of cholera include sudden acute and painless watery diarrhoea that may be accompanied with or without vomiting and nausea.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported an outbreak of cholera in 30 states with a total of 1,141 suspected cases, 65 confirmed cases and 30 deaths from January 1 to June 11.

As of Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, stated that the state has recorded 24 deaths, 35 confirmed cases and 417 suspected cases across 20 Local Government Areas in the state.

PECAN’s president further stated that sanitation and hygiene are important in combating the spread of cholera.

In a list of professional advice to Nigerians, Williams said, “Ensure clean water supply. Boil water before drinking or use water purification tablets. Store drinking water in clean, covered containers.

“Practice good hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food. Use hand sanitisers where water is not readily available.

“Maintain food safety by cooking food thoroughly and eating it while it is hot. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, especially seafood. Wash fruits and vegetables with safe water before consumption.

“Improve sanitation: Dispose of human waste properly; use latrines or other sanitation systems. Keep the environment clean and free from refuse.”

He further called for proper waste management to prevent flies and pests infestations that can contaminate food and water sources.

The PECAN president added, “Engage professional pest control services to manage any infestations, as pests can exacerbate the spread of cholera.

“Seek immediate medical attention: If symptoms of cholera appear, such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting, seek medical help immediately. Rehydration is crucial; use oral rehydration salts or appropriate home solutions.”

Williams expressed the associations’ commitment to supporting Lagosians by providing expert advice and services.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to the preventive measures outlined above. Our association stands ready to collaborate with health authorities and other stakeholders to mitigate the impact of this outbreak. Together, we can overcome this public health challenge and ensure a healthier environment for all,” he said.
