The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, has initiated an investigation into an alleged altercation involving Rev. Fr. Jude Muokwe and Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen, a 50-year-old widow.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday, has sparked controversy, with the widow claiming she was left traumatized and in severe pain.
According to sources, the confrontation began at Angel Primary School, Ifitedunu, where Muokwe, the school manager, allegedly stormed a staff meeting with a cane. The meeting, attended by Ikeorah and other teachers, focused on a salary increment request to be presented to the school management.
One account claims that Fr. Muokwe accused Ikeorah of organizing the meeting and allegedly flogged her, leading to a heated exchange. However, another version suggests that Ikeorah slapped the priest first, prompting retaliation and an escalating conflict. A viral video circulating on social media shows Ikeorah in tears, displaying injuries she allegedly sustained.
In response, the Catholic Diocese of Awka released a statement on Monday, expressing regret over the incident and assuring the public of a thorough investigation.
“The Diocese upholds integrity, character, and respect for all and does not condone misconduct in any of our schools,” the statement, signed by Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, Chancellor of the Diocese, emphasized.
The Diocese assured that appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
