CAF Debunks Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Bid Claims, Insists Guinea Holds Right

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has denied claims it is considering stripping Guinea of the hosting rights of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

There were reports that the West African country will lose the right to host Africa’s flagship soccer event due to the political situation in the country.

Guinea has been under military rule since a coup in 2021 and there are concerns over the security situation in the small nation.

The country’s wherewithal to host the competition is also a source of concern to most observers.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, had claimed on Tuesday that Nigeria and its neighbors, Benin Republic were in discussion to co-host the competition.

CAF has now come out to debunk reports it is considering ceding the hosting right of the 2025 tournament to another country.

“The host for the 2025 tournament remains Guinea and that has not changed,” a CAF told BBC Sports Africa.

“We’ve not discussed anything about a replacement or received any communication from Guinea about the inability to host. At this very moment, everything is on track for Guinea to host and there is no reason to suggest otherwise.”
