One of the longest rules in the history of modern democracy has finally ended after 37 years as President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, 93, resigned from his position on Tuesday amidst pressure.
It would be recalled that after a military takeover that placed Mugabe in house arrest last week, the President has been under intense pressure from the military, his ruling party, ZANU-PF, the country’s parliament and thousands of Zimbabweans who protested outside the parliament building, demanding the dictator’s resignation.
The country’s parliamentary speaker made the announcement, saying he had received a resignation letter from Mr Mugabe.
Zimbabweans continue in wild jubilations across the nation after the announcement of Mugabe’s resignation.
